Is Sproud organic?

We are always looking for the best possible ingredients with the smallest possible climate footprint since we strongly feel that the need to reduce the food system’s CO2 footprint is urgent and of high importance. There is currently no access to European or Swedish (nor Canadian for the North American market) organic pea protein, but we are maintaining a continuous dialogue with suppliers, innovative companies and farmers with the ambition to launch organic products in the future.

Having said that, peas, in general, are resistant to pests and molds. Peas are rarely sprayed with pesticides and this means that none to very low amounts of pesticides are detected in the harvested pea plant. If any, pesticides have most commonly accumulated in the soil from earlier crop rotations.

I suffer from Histamine Intolerance. Can I still drink Sproud products?

Sproud’s plant-based dairy products contain proteins derived from peas. Whilst peas may be high in histamine in their natural form, we use a pea protein isolate and where histamine, is removed in the process.

Why do you use agave in Sproud Barista?

The reason we use organic agave in Sproud as a sweetener is to reduce the total sugar content in the product, and also to reduce the impact on blood sugar. This has been co-developed with Baristas to provide great flavour with your coffee. If you are looking for a product completely without sugar, try Sproud Unsweetened.

Can I consume Sproud beyond the best-before date?

The shelf life is 13 months from production but the products are shelf stable and, if stored unopened at room temperature, can last longer. Make sure you shake the package well before you open it. Preferably consume the product within a week after you open it and make sure you store an open package in the refrigerator.

We are passionate about reducing food waste. Sproud products are produced in aseptic packaging (Tetra Pak) and can usually be consumed after the best-before date has passed. This means that the product’s ‘best before’ date is not definite, but that it is possible to for the product to be consumed after. However, we can only guarantee the product’s quality in terms of taste, smell, and texture until the best-before date.  We suggest that you smell and taste the product before consuming it. If it smells bad or sour it is not likely to taste good. Otherwise, you should not be worried about consuming the product.

Once I open a package of Sproud, how long after can I drink/use the product?

Sproud products should be stored in a cool, dry place before the package is opened. Once opened, the product should be kept refrigerated (maximum of +8°C/+46,6°F).

The product’s shelf-life, once opened, depends on how you as a consumer store and handle the product. The product usually stays fresh longer than 7 days (over 14 days) if you keep it refrigerated at a low temperature (+2-6°C/+36-43°F) at all times.
Make sure:

  • that the packaging is not damaged
  • the lid is closed after each use
  • you smell the product before use if you are uncertain of its quality.

I found small flakes floating on the surface of my drink. What is this and is it safe to drink?

These small white flakes floating on the surface are vitamins and minerals. The vitamins and minerals can sometimes aggregate into small flakes over time when the product hasn’t been mixed 100% (totally homogenized) during production.
As all Sproud products are natural products, without thickeners and preservatives, the products are not always totally heterogeneous. Make sure to shake your product before each use for the best product experience.

The vitamin and mineral flakes are perfectly safe to consume and do not affect the quality of the product or the shelf life.

Can you freeze Sproud milk?

We do not recommend freezing Sproud products since there is a risk that the product will separate during the thawing process. However, the product has a shelf life of at least 7 days after opening in the fridge (the lower the temperature, the better, but preferably not below 2°C). The products usually stay fresh for up to two weeks without getting spoiled. Make sure the package is not placed in room temperature for too long. Also, smell the products before you use them if you are suspicious of spoilage.

Where can I find the climate footprint for Sproud products?

The food system stands for almost a third of all global emissions and Sproud constantly work towards keeping a low climate impact. Our vision is to create a sustainable planet and society by reinforcing positive change and inspiring everyone to discover a plant-based lifestyle with less climate impact.

We, at Sproud, track and measure our products’ climate impact using real primary data in collaboration with CarbonCloud. Why are Sproud’s products based on peas?

THE IDEAL SOURCE OF SUSTAINABLE PROTEIN

Split peas are rich in proteins and contain a wide range of essential amino acids.

SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE

The pea plant has the amazing ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen in the soil through its symbiotic relationship with soil-borne bacteria. The nitrogen-fixing properties not only reduce nitrogen in the atmosphere but also improve soil fertility and the aggregation and conservation of water. Split peas also require less water, land, and energy than most other crops. By including peas in a crop rotation cycle, the yields, and energy efficiency increase up to 25% for years to come.

ALL-ROUND SUPERHERO

The split pea is rich in proteins and nutrients, reduces atmospheric nitrogen, and requires less non-renewable energy. Split peas also improve soil fertility, increase the farmland’s productivity, promote farm and soil biodiversity, and help keep harmful pests and diseases at bay without pesticides. On top of this, pea protein steams brilliantly, making Sproud drinks creamy and smooth.

What is Potassium Phosphate?

Dipotassium Phosphate is a potassium salt. It is a natural mineral and we add Dipotassium Phosphate to our Unsweetened, Original, Barista and Vanilla products to regulate the pH (acidity). Without the Dipotassium Phosphate the product would curdle in coffee and tea as they generally have a low pH (pH <5) which causes a separation of the fat and liquid within pea m*lk. An acidity regulator is therefore an essential addition in plant-based m*lk alternatives if they are aimed to be used in coffee, tea or for cooking.

Many acidity regulators can be used in foods. We have chosen an acidity regulator with characteristics that match our pea m*lk by adding natural minerals to the product while not affecting the smooth and neutral taste of our pea m*lk.

Dipotassium Phosphate is regarded as a safe additive to use in foods and is approved by EFSA (European food safety authority), FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) and other similar authorities all around the world.

We do not add Dipotassium Phosphates to Sproud Chocolate products since cacao naturally has a similar ability to regulate the acidity in the product.

Where does the coffee originate from?

It is important for us that we provide you with great coffee with consistent taste over time. Since the quality of the coffee beans can differ from year to year and region to region due to environmental factors (i.e. weather conditions, such as the amount of rain, drought, amount of sun hours, yield etc.), the coffee beans are sourced from several different Fairtrade certified farms. Therefore our Fairtrade-certified coffee does not originate from one specific region. The beans are then mixed together until we receive our specific characteristic preference.

Where does the pea protein originate from?

Our yellow split pea is sourced and processed into pea protein isolate in France.

By using peas from fields close to the pea protein factory, we can reduce transportation distance and our climate footprint. At Sproud, we are very proud of the purity and quality of our pea protein isolate and are continuously searching for high-quality pea protein isolate that we can source close to our production sites.

Does your pea protein contain glyphosate?

We guarantee that there is no glyphosate in our products.

Our pea protein isolate is regularly analysed to guarantee that there are no detectable amounts of glyphosate.
